Where to Learn

Beginners learning

In 2022 we shutdown our RYA Training Centre, to reduce the workload and responsibility placed on our volunteers who had run official courses since 2016. We have replaced it with a new support system, and improved Club equipment:

The new Beginner System places the emphasis on support so beginners can take control of their progress at a pace that suits them: C&T day basics, enhanced Buddy system, special HWC WhatsApp ‘HWC Beginners’ group, YouTube Video links, books, weather advice, Intermediate kit, and lots of encouragement! We are considering formal coaching and courses and will provide more details if this can be arranged.

Beginners are encourage to make the most of 5-10mph hot weather through the summer, to practice, practice, practice! They are advised never to sail when the wind could take them in a southerly direction i.e. never when the wind is blowing off the beach!! All safety information should be observed, and if in doubt, ask, or don’t go out!

The Club has the very best boards and sails making the learning process easier, fun, and as quickly as possible.

The club is affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association (RYA).

‘Taster’ sessions and beginner courses are also run at Whitlingham Outdoor Centre (RYA approved) at Trowse, Norwich. We offer reduced membership fees to anyone who has taken a course at Whitlingham.

Their website is www.whitlinghamadventure.org.uk

Alternatively if you just want to have a go and are thinking about joining our club, then come along to the club’s annual ‘Come n Try Day’, normally held in May/June (See Events page).

As a beginner or relatively inexperienced windsurfer you may feel nervous about joining a club and then being left to your own devices. The club has 10 qualified RYA Start Windsurfing instructors and also has a ‘buddy system’. Any member can contact one of these instructors and arrange to go sailing with them on a 1:1 informal basis.
