Its a 80 or 100 mile round trip to the Norfolk Coast for me so I'm quite selective where I go. Below are my views. Wells in my opinion is by far the best location for me, relatively safe, easy to sail, rig, launch and awesome when the Wind has some North in it. Ive known guys from Rhosneigr, Anglesey (~300 miles away) to travel there just for the day. Must be one of the best places in the UK. Anyway here are my thoughts on some on the locations I've tried.

  Wells   Hunstanton   East Runton   Brancaster
Where is the best place to park? Note all parking is by Pay and display – can be up to £5/day. Next to the Café.    By the sailing club in centre.   By Static Caravan park   By the beach near the Golf club

What facilities (toilets, changing area, etc) are available? WC and Café   WC, hose, shops etc.   WC, few shops   WC, café trailer

What is the best wind direction? Only sail when some North in the wind.   S/W, avoid when off-shore   N/W, N/E   Not sure.
Off shore good for speed sailing – be careful.

Best place to launch? By Life boat house.   Any of the beach ramps club car park   Only one access point  – by public car park   Only one access point  – by public car park

Tide advice Sail 2/3 hrs before high tide   Either side of low tide best, no beach at high tide! Long walk at low tide   Either side of low tide best, ramps up on reefs   V. Long walk at low tide.. OK up to high tide.

Water obstacles Few, beware obvious sand banks   Few, beware obvious sand banks   Sharp flints set in chalk – wear boots.   Few, beware obvious sand banks

Comments Just awesome, relatively safe in a  Northerly.   Rigging on concrete, sand not best. Catches SW wind well   Rig on beach or grass car park.   Rig on beach

Overall rating (10 high) 10 on a good day, F4 + with a good swell. One of the best spots in the UK?   7 Awesome flat water off sand banks. Otherwise can be very choppy   5, in my experience although experienced sailors swear by it.   3 Only sailed there once, choppy and not nice. Rumoured to be good though.

Hi Martin,

Do I need a permit for Wells?  The very aged (2003) Wells windsurfing website talks about an orange sticker etc.  The harbour website says nothing as far as I can see?

Mike

Mike, the permit or pass is news to me. I do drop a tenner in the collection box by the the look out tower every now and then. It's reassuring to know those guys are there keeping an eye on safety across the beach and bay, and another reason to sail here – but remember you have to be a competent windsurfer to sail anywhere on the sea.

Back in the mid 90’s you did have to get a permit from the harbour master, but this as far as im aware has long gone. Just turn up and sail. Martin has got a good point about occasionally donating some dosh as you never know when you may need help.(thats talking from experience)
