Hi I’m new to the forum as I’m looking to get back to windsurfing (as cheaply as possible) after a 20 year layoff – at the moment I have a couple of boards, a 5.3m sail and a 160 – 220 boom – I’m really looking for 2 masts a 400 and a 460 – I’d quite like the 400 to be a rdm. I’m also after 3 sails 4.4 – 4.6m, 6 – 6.5m and a 7 – 7.5m. Finally, I have no deck plate or mast extension so looking for these too.
I just thought it worth an ask here since i’m local and thinking that on certain wind directions Hickling could be a great alternative option to the east coast. Any advice on best wind direction for the Broad would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mrkmrk! I cannot help you with gear – but have a regular scan of the “for sale” part of the club website and who knows?
What I can comment on is wind direction. Basically, anything which has not got northerly in it somehow, makes for good sailing. The beach is at the the northern end of the broad and a northerly catches disturbance around the trees in the rigging area etc. There is often a dead spot by the beach in a northerly for this reason, which makes getting of the beach testing. Also of course, with that disturbed wind pattern the closer you get on returning to the beach, the more the tack back becomes challenging.
A reasonable number of hickling members will head for Wells in a northerly if the tides are right. It is a long drive up there but well worth it if conditions are right. Rule of thumb is get on the water two hours before high tide and then get a good three hours in.
So. Anthing southerly is great but Hickling does work well in a westerly and an easterly. In summer, we look for an easterly sea breeze to give a blast mid afternoon if the conditioSmilens are right. And certainly, a westerly can be very satisfying, as you can blat straight down the broad with no tacking required, and blat all the way back, only dropping off the plane as you approach the beach. Happy days.

It can be tricky in a Northerly at Hickling to get back to the beach. However, some great sailing can still be had by sailing down to the point, as per the last Fun day, and go around the corner towards pleasure island can be awesome. Don’t try it if you are not competent in sailing up wind.
