What a glorious return to Hickling form! Haven’t sailed since October but it was worth waiting for and good to see so many out on the water.
GPS recorded 29kts across the broad today which is faster than anything I achieved last year.

Surprised

My first main session at Hickling for 2013 and I have to agree with Mike.

On arrival the car park was getting full, mainly from more VW Transporters than I had seen at Hickling before (whats all that about?). 20 dec C, and Force 6-7. I was on the water at 2pm and was eventually overpowered on my 4.9. Others were having more success on smaller sails. Top speed was 31mph/27 kts (mph sounds faster). The best advice of the day was use my winter steamer (thanks JT) as despite the very warm weather the water is still very cold. I spent about half my time in the water, and it was freezing – although nice and toasty in the suit.

Hopefully that’s the end of winter.

Hi Dudes.
Nice to see such a good turn out on Sunday. But today (Monday) has been really nice too. Not so gusty and a good S.S.W and sunny.
6.5 just perfect for me (but after all I am a midget) The others Phil P. Dave H. Dick (Reg ) Varney and Roger Lord all rigged a bit
bigger and all seemed to be going well. I’m sorry if this cheeses off the dudes who had to go to work today .NOT. Your time will
come soon enough.
Here’s hoping for a long hot windy summer.
J.T.

I love it when a plan comes together. A light southerly wind on a hot day can lead to a nice sea breeze. We dropped into Hickling on the way to the coast on the off chance that there may be some wind. None of the forecasts were predicting any, and despite some movement it was oddly calm down at the broad. I thought I was doomed when Alan turned up but no sooner had he turned his back the sea breeze came in with a vengeance. Amazing… from calm to Force 5 in about a minute! 3:30pm on the dot. It settled into a good force 3-4 for a good hour or so, ideal for the SB Formula and 9m. No other windsurfers around so had great fun blasting past the dingys …sorry:)

Great to sneak in a sail, it helps to balance those mid week ‘you missed another great day windsurfing’ emails.

Another great sail today with the whole place to my self so joined the sailing club races again. The on-shore breeze replaced with a strong westerly. The 9m was 2 or 3 meters too large in the gusts but I hung on without any mishaps. Hopefully I’ll have some company on my next visit.

Warm it wasn’t… Windy it was with big holes too
5.2m quite big enough to provide 25kt entertainment around the green post just out from the beach
Good company too

Arrived late as a couple of regulars were then off to the pub complete with baby buggy and passenger. NNW wind dropping over the club and sailing club area created some strong force 3-4 gusts and blowing through to the far end of the broad. 1 1/2 hrs on the formula/9m, and mainly maxed out with little other traffic on the broad today. Great conditions for trying different angles. Closely hauled going almost down wind while planing past cruisers that were on a run was kind of strange. Spooky to have the whole club and beach to my self again, perhaps everyone had a good sail yesterday in the stronger wind?
At 18/20 deg C it was a gorgeous day all-round. Good to have summer back ..hope it lasts.
