Hi All,
following conversations at the fun day i have volunteered to organise a race day – the idea being to have a get together at the club enjoy a few simple races with as little organisation as possible. Planned for either Saturday 2nd or Saturday 16th October this would give us a couple of shots at the weather and the confirmation would be posted on the forum on the friday before. In outline:
3 races (1 “long distance” around the broad and 2 course races) start
at 11.00
All races to count for the regatta / long distance race to have
seperate prize also
Courses set around existing navigation bouys and posts (no club bouys
needed – I can draw up some sort of course card so we know where we are going!)
Treated as allcomers racing i.e. sail what you bring longboard,
shortboard, formula
courses to be decided on the day to suit conditions and sailors /
boards – likely to be a mix of styles i.e. a bit of everything in the
long race, 1 reachy race and one race with some upwind / downwind in it
simplified starting system ( I am happy to do this from the water) so
no organisers required – everyone gets to sail!
“honesty” finishing between the 2 nav posts just off the beach
Maybe set up some simple “handicapping” to try and equalize difference between kit i.e. pursuit system
where experienced sailors on the fastest kit start after those less
experienced or using kit that is not that suited to racing style. I
think we could do this for the 2 and 3 race (using the 1st one to
establish speeds?)
Prizes (beer) at the end of the day
if you are interested please reply to this thread so we can judge how many people are coming – I think we will need to get 5 or so to make it happen; I joined in some of the (dinghy and cat) racing yesterday at Gt. Yarmouth and Gorleston SC and had a great in sail superb conditions with the fun of working around the course. if you have not done any racing before why not give this a go the idea will be to have good sailing, all help each other and enjoy a bit of a get together not “intense racing”. if you use to race back in the day then pull out that old kit dust it off and join in the fun! if you wany anyore info or have questions use this thread or send me a PM

Hi All,
well we have plenty of interest for the race day; so the plan is to look at the weather mid / end of week and decide if this Saturday is going to be any good. I will then post on this forum to say it is on for definate. If the weather looks poor we will Not do this Saturday and the event will definately run on the 16th Oct. Hope this works for everyone

Forecast for Saturday is still looking light from the west but fairly shifty; a weather front is due to move through tomorrow bringing strong southerly. Anyone got any thoughts on whether to run the racing on Saturday? or we put it back to the 16th. if the forecast holds we are looking at sub-planning conditions which is Ok if you're on a long board but not much good on anything else

It's worth checking the situation late on Friday afternoon. Weather forecasts for Hickling are usually wrong and there is a chance that with a Southerly it could be good later in the afternoon and it's looking to be dry. In my experience 8 mph (check the windguru link on the LHS of the home page) could be plus 6mph or so.

What is a long board?? Only joking. Its got to pick up a bit to make it worth while I think……

Checked round the weather sites again this morning Windguru/XC weather/windfinder still same forecast for tomorrow pretty light westerly swinging to the south and building in the afternoon to 9 or 10 mph. I will check around again after this afternoon – we've got quite people talking about coming so we want to try and get a good sail out of it; the question is whether we hold off till the 16th in the hope of some October winds or go for it with the idea that we may get a bit more wind than forecast?

Hi all,
weather forecasts still predicting light westerly shifting to the south – forecast has been pretty acurate all week and the nature of the weather systems doesn't offer much hope of a sudden change. With this forecast I think the racing planned for tomorrow should be rescheduled to the 16th; there seems to be plenty of interest and we really need some decent wind.
So No racing tomorrow but definately going to go for it on the 16th October – hope that works for everyone; jump on the thread if you think we should do it differently
