Many thanks for the write up Mark and welcome to the club. It's good know the Buddy system worked for you, as it has for many others via support by other Buddies - Philip, Dave, Richard, John, and others. It was a pleasure to meet you. The plums are a nice bonus this year, I've never seen such a good crop before.

It's worth pointing out there is a lot of informal buddying going on too by way of tips and advice by other members who happen to be at the beach, so new members can be assured help, guidance, and a sense of humour isn't far away.

..and thanks for the comedy JT, only joking, no I'm not, y......etc.

As a new member of Hickling Windsurfing Club, I thought I would take the opportunity to share my experience of the excellent buddy system operated by the club.
After exchange of emails and texts to arrange a suitable time, I was met by Martin, my buddy for the day at the appointed time one Saturday morning. Although not new to windsurfing itself, I still had a few uncertainties, what will the facilities be like, where do I find everything, how do I rig the club equipment etc. A very friendly person (like everyone else I have met at the club) Martin took the time to patiently explain everything I could possibly need to know about the club and getting started. Talking me through the facilities, club equipment, the broad, rigging the equipment and more, Martin completely dispelled all uncertainty. Nothing was too much trouble for him and by the end of our time together, which culminated in a very enjoyable first session on the water, I felt totally at ease in my new surroundings. Thanks Martin.
I thoroughly recommend the buddy system to anyone joining the club, particularly if you are new to windsurfing and/or anxious about joining somewhere new etc.
I also think the club equipment is a fantastic resource and this has enabled me to get on the water and have some seriously good fun until I can get my own equipment sorted.
The plums are also a fantastic resource! - where is my jar of jam Lisa?
Good times.
I look forward to seeing you on the water.
Mark

I'm pleased to tell you that the club 4.7m North Sail (this is the smallest of the four) has just been returned from the repairers (new bottom panel fitted), and, thanks to David Thorneycroft, will likely be returned to the kit hut on Saturday, or shortly thereafter, wind permitting!

Also, the pins on three of the mast bases were loose, and Tony West and I tightened them last week.

One member reported that the mast extension to club sail number 3 was missing, but it has been located left in a mast, has now been removed (stuck in with sand) and returned to the bag with Sail 3.

As far as I know, that means that all the club kit is restored to working order.

ENJOY YOUR SAILING, BUT PLEASE LOOK AFTER THE KIT WHEN YOU USE IT!!
The recent newsletter covered some aspects of kit care, including washing sand off kit, i.e.boards, sails, masts etc, and packing it up on the grass area, not on the beach.

Please report any problems with kit in the log provided in the kit hut, so we can deal with it.

Finally, PLEASE ENSURE THE KIT HUT DOOR IS LOCKED AT ALL TIMES WHEN NOT BEING ACCESSSED.

Thanks all.

Philip Peaston

I'm not an expert but here is my observations.

The sea breeze works in a Southerly, more powerful with a little Easterly in it, less powerful with a little Westerly.
Works slightly better pre-summer where the sea is still cold.
Comes in at 3:30pm ish. Can stay for 2 hours or so.
Doesn't work when the wind is Northerly - haven't a clue why.
Can be the only place on the whole Eastern coast/UK to be windy.
If the forecast shows 5 to 10 mph Southerly off the coast then it usually works for me.

Hope that helps.

Do any of you experienced hands want to chip in and express an opinion on when / if sea breezes kick in at Hickling on these Summer days? For instance, on a relatively still day like today is there a predictable hour or so of wind in the evening, or is not as easy as that?
